We Love: Witherod Viburnum
This native of Eastern woodlands and wetlands has very interesting berries.
Plant name: witherod viburnum, appalachian tea, wild raisin
Botanical name: Viburnum nudum var. cassinoides
Virtues: Highly ornamental berries appear green in early summer and turn several different colors, including warm pink, over the course of the season.
Flower: Circular clusters of ivory flowers appear in spring.
Foliage: Emerge bronze in spring, appear deep green in summer, turn red in autumn.
Habit: Multistemmed shrub reaches a height and spread of 6 to 8 feet.
Season: Spring to frost.
Origin: Woodlands and wetlands of eastern North America, mostly the Northeast and Midwest.
Cultivation: Moist soil. Partial sun. Several hours of full sun each day bring out the berries’ best color. USDA Zones 3–8.
