Virtues: This relatively small ornamental grass has a fantastic flower color. It is also low maintenance and virtually pest free.

Bloom color: Flower spikes appear in the fall as a frothy haze of deep pink.

Leaf/Foliage: Long, narrow, glossy green leaves up to three feet long.

Goes great with: It is best used en masse to capture the full effect of the sway and movement in the wind. Most people will use five or more plants in a group. Often muhlys are used in combination with desert plants to soften their appearance. It can be intertwined with a wide variety of plants to mask the base of grass clump when in dormancy.

Habit: Grows quickly to three feet, flowers, and then goes into dormancy after a hard frost.

Season: Flowers from September to October.

Where does it come from: Gulf muhly, as the name implies, ranges from the Atlantic Coast to Kansas down into Texas and Mexico.

Tips: Provide regular irrigation and fertilization to encourage the best bloom.
