Why This Works – Garden Design

Curved garden beds are elegant. They provide movement in the garden, gently guiding your eyes and your feet as you explore. They remain visible, even in the winter. The curve of the garden bed can be created by the contours of the bed against a lawn, or, like in this example, the solid surface of a patio.

This garden is well defined by its brick walls. The interior is comfortable and visually appealing even in winter. The walls create an intimate space in an area surround by woods and the curve of the patio/beds is soothing. If the beds were simply pulled four feet from the walls and a rectangular patio installed, the semi-private sitting areas would be lost, and the entire area would feel too formal.

The walls and the curved patio strike the perfect balance of formal and casual design.
