I know plant tags include a recommended spacing, but what if I'm planting two or three different kinds of plants and they all require different spacing? How far apart should I space different plants?
Answer: To site plants with different spreads and allow them all the necessary space to grow, add their recommended spacing together and divide the sum by two. This is the distance you should leave between them.
For example, say you want to plant a hosta next to a Jacob's ladder (Polemonium spp.). The hosta's tag says "space 24 inches apart" and the Jacob's ladder's tag says "space 12 inches apart." Add 24 and 12 to get 36. Divide 36 by 2 to get 18. Space the plants 18 inches from each other.
