If you're planning a trip away from home this winter, or you're just concerned that you'll neglect your houseplants while the holidays keep you busy and distracted, try this easy trick by which they can take care of themselves.

Just water your houseplants thoroughly, let them drain, and then place them, pot and all, into a large plastic bag. Seal the bag at the top and set it out of direct sun. The bag could be a food-storage bag if the plant is relatively small, or a dry-cleaner's bag for large houseplants. The bag will act as a mini greenhouse, keeping moisture from escaping into the surrounding air and thereby stopping your houseplants from drying out.
