Large Beardtongue
Large beardtongue (Penstemon grandiflorus) is an upright perennial with large lavender-colored flowers.

Virtues: Large, appealing flowers. Upright, narrow shape. Tolerates drought.
Flower: In spring and early summer, 2-inch-long lavender-colored tubular flowers appear in multitude on tall stalks.
Foliage: Waxy, bluish green leaves. Foliage at the base is nearly round.
Habit: Herbaceous perennial, 2 to 4 feet tall and 1 to 1.5 feet wide.
Season: Spring.
Origin: Dry prairies throughout the central part of the United States.
Cultivation: Grow in sandy or gravelly well-draining soil. Needs full sun. Tolerates drought; prefers dry soil. Cut the flowering stems can be cut off once flowering finishes. Will spread by seed in optimum conditions if seed heads are left in place. The cultivar 'Prairie Snow' has large white flowers; 'War Axe' offers a mix of pink and purple flowers.USDA Zones 3–9.
