Asking for it

I’m thinking about unleashing my Variegated Butterbur… (insert trumpets of doom here)

Last year I purchased a variegated butterbur (Petasites japonicus var. giganteus) to keep in a container next to my front door. It looked really great all summer, but where’s the adventure in doing the same thing beside my front door this year? So I’m thinking about potting it up to a giant container and sinking the container so it doesn’t spread into Illinois. If you’re unfamiliar with butterbur, it’s the kind of plant that if given enough water it will become your entire landscape.

I think the butterbur would look lovely in my front yard. Then I could do something new and unexpected by the front door. Something like cactii wearing troll doll wigs; I haven’t thought that far ahead yet.
