Botanical name:Vaccinium angustifolium
Virtues: Spring flowers, sweet summer fruit, red fall foliage. Can be used as a groundcover.
Foliage: Small, narrow, glossy dark green leaves that turn red in the fall.
Flowers: Clusters of white or slightly pink bell-shaped half-inch flowers appear in the spring.
Fruit: Half-inch blue-black berries follow ripen in summer. Edible.
Habit: Densely branched deciduous shrub to 2 feet tall and wide.
Season: Spring through fall.
Origin: Conifer woods and sandy or rocky fields from eastern Canada to Delaware, west to Ohio.
Cultivation: Requires acidic soil, even moisture and good drainage. Prefers sandy soil but will tolerate other soils as long as the site is acidic. Will grow in full sun to partial shade. To establish it quickly as a groundcover, look for lowbush blueberry in sod form. USDA Zones 2–8.
