Tip of the Week: Designing Winter Containers

In all but the coldest zones (1–5), planting in tubs, pots, window boxes and hanging baskets is an easy and effective way to bring color and interest to the garden in winter. Here are some planting ideas:

Small Evergreens
Dwarf Irish juniper, Juniperus communis ‘Compressa’ (Zones 2–7)
Dwarf silver fir, Abies concolor ‘Compacta’ (Zones 4¬–7)
English boxwood, Buxus sempervirens (Zones 6–9)
Bay, Laurus nobilis (Zones 8–9)
Winter-flowering heathers, Erica carnea (Zones 5–7) and E. xdarleyensis (Zones 4–7)

Evergreens with Berries
Skimmia japonica (Zones 7–8)
Self-pollinating holly, Ilex ‘JC van Tol” (Zones 6–9)

Winter Fragrant Shrubs
Sarcococca confusa (Zones 6–8)
Lonicera nitida ‘Baggesen’s Gold’ (Zones 7–9)

Variegated Evergreens
Euonymun fortunei ‘Emerald Gaity’ (Zones 5–8)
Variegated box, Buxus sempervirens ‘Elegantissima’

Trailing Evergreens
Variegated periwinkle, Vinca minor ‘Argenteovariegata’
Ivies, Hedera (Zones 4–9)
