For thick hedges like Ribes alpinum that are going to need size control, I like to prune in fall and "punch holes" in the leaf cover to let light into the center of the plant. The increased light seems to trigger latent buds and keeps the foliage from migrating to the very outside of the shrub. Then when I prune next year to control size, there is foliage all the way into the center of the plant. The plant can stay 'fuzzy' and be reduced in size without looking 'pruned'.
