Plant name: Heirloom Sweet Pea

Botanical name: Lathyrus matucana

Suggested by: Tracy Lee, The Cook’s Garden (www.cooksgarden.com)

Virtues: An heirloom sweet pea with exceedingly rich color and fragrance. It is also relatively heat resistant.

Flower: Unique maroon and blue bicolor.

Foliage: Delicate light green leaves (typical sweet pea).

Habit: Climbing, vinelike.

Season: Spring to early summer.

Companions: Looks great twining up the most ornate obelisk or the simplest willow tipi.
