Canada Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis)

Plant name: Canada columbine

Botanical name: Aquilegia canadensis

Virtues: Produces a multitude of airy red flowers over several months. Resists leaf miner more than other columbines. Attracts hummingbirds.

Foliage: Dark green and fern like.

Flower: One- to two-inch bell-like red flowers are held on tall stems. Prominent yellow stamens.

Habit: Clump-forming perennial. Grows 24 to 36 inches tall and wide.

Season: Spring into summer.

Origin: Eastern Canada south to Florida and west to New Mexico.

Cultivation: Prefers rich moist soil and light to medium shade, but will also grow well in any average soil and full sun. Requires good drainage. Self-seeds to form large colonies if allowed.
