Spring Flower Gardens and Wild Plants in New Zealand
November 5-19, 2006 with Nan Sinton
Escape with Horticulture to the green beauty of New Zealand, to a land of strange
and wonderful wild plants and obsessed gardeners. In November, the southern
hemisphere’s spring throws a magic cloak over New Zealand, bringing exquisite
color to its gardens. Here we’ll find crystal clear air, and a brilliant mix of native
plants and more familiar horticultural favorites. We’ll see the intense turquoise
blue of glacier-fed lakes, the dappled green light in forests of tree ferns and
southern beech, the majestic kauri trees, (Agathis australis), known to the Maori
as the lords of the forest, and the glorious wildflowers of the Southern Alps.
Our visits will take us to breathtaking private gardens on remote sheep farms,
tiny hidden city lots, and historic estates, all tribute to the single-minded New
Zealanders’ obsession with plants and gardening.
Space is limited.
