Horticulturalist Howard Van Vleck, the last member of the Van Vleck family to reside at Van Vleck House in Montclair, was born on September 4, 1904. In his honor and to celebrate the 1993 transfer of the Van Vleck House & Gardens to the Montclair Foundation, picnickers are invited to a Labor Day potluck at the gardens. Bring a lunch—and a favorite dish to share—and enjoy a piece of birthday cake courtesy of Van Vleck. The event is free of charge and will be held from 1 to 3 pm on Monday, September 6, weather permitting. Reservations are not required. Contact info@vanvleck.org or call 973-744-4752 with questions.
