JUNE 2-4

Point Defiance Flower & Garden Show

Tacoma, WA 253-305-1008 www.ptdefianceflowershow.corr

This June, take a trip to the largest outdoor garden event west of the Mississippi. The Point Defiance Flower & Garden Show will be jampacked with display gardens, exhibits, and events that amateur gardeners and experts alike will enjoy. Fourteen elabo-rate display gardens will be in bloom, as will window box displays, container gardens, floral displays, and a sculpture garden exhibition. Local and national horticultural experts will be on hand to give presentations that will include slide shows, Q&A sessions, demonstrations, and book signings. The Gardener’s Plant Market will give visitors the chance to act on the inspiration they gain from the show’s displays and lectures.

SOMETHING TO SEE

Don’t be alarmed; there is no giant bird making its home in the Franklin Park Conservatory. The oversized nestlike structures made from intertwined tree saplings are sculptural installations by Patrick Dougherty, not the creation of a monster bird. Dougherty, an internationally acclaimed artist, began creating pieces on-site in February, and in June he will create the last of four sculptures while visitors watch and interact with him. (Be on your toes—Dougherty is known for taking inspiration from onlookers.) Special gallery talks on June 17 and 24 will give visitors the chance to hear more about Dougherty’s vision. Don’t worry if you can’t make it out to see him in action—his work will remain on display through Labor Day. The sculptures truly warrant a visit; as Franklin Park Conservatory’s Executive Director Paul Redman puts it, Patrick Dougherty’s sculptures “truly represent the artistic beauty of nature.”
