Cleveland Botanical Garden Flower Show
Cleveland, OH 216-721-1600 www.cbgarden.org
The Cleveland Botanical Garden Flower Show is one of the largest outdoor flower shows in North America, drawing about 30,000 guests to its lectures, demonstrations, and exhibits over the course of Memorial Day weekend. Modeled after the Royal Horticultural Society’s Chelsea Flower Show, it brings a bit of Britain to the home of rock ‘n’ roll. This year, the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s 75th, the show presents the theme ‘The Garden as Art.” Visitors will learn how gardens are works of art in and of themselves-and how gardeners working under any budget can add artwork to plants and plantings in creative, effective, complementary ways.
Hidden Gardens Tour Big Sur Arts Initiative
Big Sur, CA 831-667-1530 www.bigsurarts.org
Travelers along California’s Highway 1 usually view the awe-inspiring Big Sur landscape from designated scenic overlooks. The Hidden Gardens Tour, now in its seventh year, invites its guests to step out of their cars and into a series of just-as-inspiring private gardens, most of which can’t be seen from the road. Volunteers and homeowners are on hand at each site to discuss the challenges Big Sur geography and climate present to gardeners, and the creative solutions that make these gardens remarkable. A $45 ticket gains visitors access to the private gardens, and all proceeds benefit Big Sur Arts Initiative, a nonprofit organization providing arts enrichment programs for children of local low-income families. This event has raised over $20,000 in past years, and advanced purchase of tickets is strongly recommended.
