Meghan Lynch Bio
Name: Meghan Lynch (most people call me Meg)
Position: Managing Editor
How long have you worked at Horticulture? Three years
What is your background? I studied creative writing and publishing in school. I have kept houseplants as a hobby since I was little, with a special interest in cacti. This will be my third year gardening outdoors.
Where do you garden? In the Merrimack Valley of Massachusetts, about 30 miles north of Boston. We are inland and on the colder side of USDA Hardiness Zone 6.
Who or what first inspired you to garden? My parents and grandparents, and working here.
What are your favorite plants to grow? Indoors, cacti and other succulents, African violets and other gesneriads. Outdoors, hardy geraniums, columbines, violets, coreopsis.
What is your garden like? I have an eight-foot by eight-foot bed in the back yard that I am using as a learning garden. The first year I planted annuals and some veggies, but found the spot didn't get enough sun to support them. Last year I planted perennials for part shade and those did pretty well. The garden has rocky clay soil, morning shade, and afternoon sun, so it is a challenge. Out front, I plant annuals around the mailbox. I like starting those from seed.
What plans or goals do you have for your garden this season? I want to turn my back garden into a rock garden. I have plenty of rocks from when I dug the garden, and more seem to appear at the surface every spring. I plan to arrange them among the plants I already have, expand the garden's size, and add more rocks and new plants.
In your free time, if you aren't gardening, what are you doing? I'm knitting (I made the top in my picture), running, and/or hanging out with my two dogs (bichons frises).
